Preparing For A Storm

Storms bring dangerous winds, heavy rain, lightning, hail, flash flooding and tornados to the southern half of Western Australia between May and October each year. Storms can cause damage to homes, cars and the environment and can even cause injury or loss of life. Storms can also occur during the warmer months so it is important to stay prepared all year round.

On March 22, 2010, two months before the official start of storm season, Perth experienced one of its worst storms in 16 years. It caused a billion dollars in damage to thousands of cars and buildings. The Insurance Council of Australia advised it was the most costly natural disaster on record in the State. SES volunteers received more than 3000 calls for assistance and worked tirelessly for a week to help those affected.

While severe storms cannot be prevented, much can be done to limit their effects on the community. Most storm damage to homes occurs from loose and broken roof materials, fallen trees and branches and flooding from blocked gutters and downpipes. Before the storm season starts in May you need to prepare your home and family and have a plan so you can stay safe and reduce the damage.

FESA State Emergency Service volunteers are prepared for the storm season and will do everything they can to make your community safe. These volunteers take time away from their families and work to help those in need after storms. You need to help them by knowing how to get ready for a storm and knowing how to act during a storm and after a storm. You should also keep informed about the latest weather information.
